The Constant Struggle Between Authors & Designers

I recently had the pleasure of helping my good friend Kimberly Kiehne with her soon-to-be-released book Shifting. Like a lot of authors out there, she was stuck on the dreaded book cover. For whatever reason, a large number of writers find it difficult to find an illustrator or designer who can provide really good artwork for an affordable price. Why is that? Well, ladies and gentlemen, I think I have some insight…

BOOK UPDATE: Some Changes and Progress

Okay everybody, so I went through a bit of a personal funk this past month, and now that I’ve been able to work through most of the crap, I can now, with confidence, provide an update on the novel. YAY!!!!!!!!!!!

After realizing a couple of weeks ago that I had made a stupid rookie mistake regarding my character names, I had decided to give the lead heroine a new name.  Let’s face it, “Nate and Natalie” just won’t work well for my two leads.  So, after much debate, as well as a poll on Google+, I have given Natalie a new moniker. I’d like to re-introduce my noble heroine, Miss Evelyn Gray.  Her close friends call her Eve for short and will prove to be a strong character in the story.  Some of you might be sitting there thinking that Eve is a stupid name, or that it sits a little on the “not a popular name” side of the spectrum. Well, here are my reasons for Evelyn.  First off, it’s a beautiful, yet simple name, which reflects both the character’s inner beauty as well as her outward appearance.  Also, I found that there’s a bit of irony in her name itself, with the biblical allusion to the Creation story completely contradicting the apocalyptic end of humanity within the main storyline. I would love to say that this irony was intentionally contrived on my part, but the truth is, I just like how it sounded.

In addition to a new character name, I have also recently finished writing a pretty intense action sequence, which now folds in the remaining human survivor characters in one big lump! Now things are going to get interesting as we get to know these new additions as they struggle to live on as their world literally crashes down around them. Meanwhile, our hero Nathan has managed to escape the military’s quarantine of downtown Pittsburgh with his friend Ronnie and now continues his quest to re-unite with Eve. Pittsburgh, as well as the vast majority of the civilized world, burns and is quickly becoming uninhabitable as military forces do everything they can to prevent the undead from completely overrunning the city.

The novel is currently about 1/3 of the way finished. I’m getting increasingly excited the farther I get into it!  I can’t wait for you all to read it!!!

Stupid busy, but back to the grind?

Wow, so I thought that after my short hiatus I would be back to work on the novel full swing.  Silly me forgot that Murphy’s Law is in fact an actual phenomenon.  Between freelance work, actual work, and all of life’s awesomeness, I have yet to sit down and pick up the proverbial pen and continue plowing ahead on the manuscript.  Not to worry my eager followers, the writing will commence…I promise.

So with that my loyal followers, I am ready to leave the grind in order to get back to the grind.

Temporary Lapse

Hello everybody!  If you have attempted to visit the site recently, you may have noticed that the site was down. I’ve managed to resolve the issue with my hosting provider (obviously) and it should be smooth sailing from here on out.

I apologize for the interruption or any inconvenience this might have caused.  Thanks for your understanding and continued support!

BOOK UPDATE: A Field Test & Getting Back To It

It’s been a little while since my last post and I do apologize for that.  I took a much needed mini-vacation into the beautiful Allegheny National Forest with my lovely wife and some great friends.

I had thought about packing up my laptop so I could sneak away and do a little writing while communing with nature, but at the last minute, decided against it.  First off, my wife would have been pretty annoyed with me, as I tend to go off to la-la-land when I’m in the literary zone.  But I realized that the whole point of the trip was to get away from everything.  My mind and spirit needed to recharge, so the laptop stayed at home to collect some dust.  That was definitely the right decision.

I had a great opportunity to “field test” the novel by holding a story time around the campfire.  The six of us sat around the crackling flames as I read from SHUFFLE.  The story seemed to keep them captivated and on more than one occasion, they commented on particular details that either spooked them or made them laugh.  When it was all said and done, the whole group gave a resounding thumbs-up on the book so far.  One person in our group had made the comment that as I was reading, they could actually see the story play out in their mind as if they were watching a movie.  A girl in our group even said that she was most likely going to have nightmares about it, but quickly followed that up with the fact that she loved it.

Those were probably some of the best compliments I could ask for.  Although I didn’t get any negative comments or feedback (which would have been helpful), I think that I’m definitely on the right path to success with this manuscript.  As I put a close on Part 2 and begin Part 3, I should be able to start revisions on Part 1 very soon.

Vacation is over.  Back to work.  Smilie: :-)

BOOK UPDATE: Nearing the Next Milestone

Well, it’s been another one of those weekends, when some bad news and busy schedules made for some inconsistent writing.  It’s definitely hard to find the motivation to be creative when your heart and mind just aren’t in it.

I was able to get a little more eked out and I’m now even closer to finishing up with Part 2.  It looks like I have just one more section to go and then I can shove it off to my editor for comments.

On a Word-Smithing Roll!

I have an idea! After sustaining a fairly lengthy writing drought as I worked hard to re-design my website and create the cover art for the novel, I’m now back to pouring my effort into the manuscript.  Last night was my most productive night of writing yet; I was able to smash out 2,700 words and complete a nice sized suspense/action scene!

The weather forecast calls for showers and thunderstorms tonight, so I’m really hoping that I can keep the pace up!  I seem to write best during stormy weather, so I don’t want to squander any opportunities to crush out another big bite of the book.

I sense that I’m drawing close to finishing up the initial draft of Part 2.  All I have left to do is finish up with the current scene, then write two more and then I can put Part 2 to rest until revisions.
